Full Description

Field boundaries of probable medieval date are visible as earthworks and cropmarks on aerial photographs, on the eastern edge of Shipmeadow parish, centred on circa TM 384894. The roughly north to south field boundary is visible as a fragmentary feature for almost 1 kilometre, from circa TM 38368890 where it probably abutted a corner formed by the line of Clarke's Lane, to TM 38598986 at Bungay Road. This boundary appears to have formed the western edge of a 'U' shaped parcel of land with High Common on its eastern edge and Shipmeadow to the south. It is possible that the alignment of parish boundaries along more recent field edges broke up this probably medieval parcel of land. A shorter east to west boundary is also visible roughly halfway along the longer boundary. (S1-S3)
