Full Description
A relict flood defence bank or possible causeway of probable post-medieval date is visible on aerial photographs as an earthwork almost 700 metres long crossing Peto's Marsh, Carlton Colville parish, centred on circa TM 496928. This bank was probably part of one of the earlier marshland reclamation projects in this area, the spur of land now known as Peto's Marsh offering an easily enclosed discrete parcel of land. The bank recorded here projects from the river flood defence bank to the west at TM494931and probably reconnected with it to the east (S1, S2).
