Click here for more information or help from Suffolk IT Hi Hannah David Adamson, the conservator who has been working on Wolseys Gate for IBC, noticed some septaria / tile masonry in the wall of St Peters Church, alongside the gateway, which reminds him of Roman era construction from Colchester Castle keep, where he has also worked (see image). The Suffolk Heritage Explorer website refers, under ‘Roman Settlements’ to the location: It is also possible that there was a Roman farmstead within the later Saxon town, with suggestive find groups around Wolsey’s College and St Mary’s church (IPS 054, IPS 055, IPS 745) and definite late Iron Age and Roman features at Elm St (IPS 053). However, many of the excavations have found Roman objects, such as tiles, that were very likely collected from elsewhere, introducing some uncertainty about how to interpret these sites. The masonry looks like a very solid survival which I imagine might have attracted more archaeological interest if it was actually Roman, but I thought I would copy Davids message to you as its an interesting observation.
