Description

SAXMUNDHAM TM3863 RENDHAM ROAD 841-1/3/48 Post Mill Roundhouse 08/08/95 II Roundhouse of former post mill. Mid C19, containing late C18 trestle. Gault brick: boarded conical roof (partly missing). Circular on plan. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys. Ground and first floor openings to each quater. Small-paned cast-iron windows under segmental brick arches. Boarded entrance door to west; 1st floor loading half-door to south; later doorway to north. INTERIOR: brick piers support oak trestle of late C18 mill, the main post cut off just above the joint with the quater bars. Unusual 1st floor structure, with 4 beams spanning between the piers to form a square, within which are further squares set diagonally to each other, leaving a central octagonal void. At 2nd floor level are 3 bins and a sack hoist bollard which served engine driven machinery, including a pair of millstones, now removed. HISTORY: the mill, one of the tallest in Suffolk, was dismantled in 1907. This, the remaining roundhouse, is a good late example, dating from the time the mill was raised as a result of encroaching residential development. Listing NGR: TM3826263123
