Building record SXM 006 - Albion Mill postmill dated to 1824

Grade II listed mill. The mill was constructed in 1824 and it is thought to be one of the tallest of its kind. It was raised to compensate for windloss caused by the encrochment of surounding buildings at its base. A lightning strike in 1907 caused damage to the upper part of the mill and this was dismantled. The brick roundhouse was primarily used as a store. After WWII the timber shed was added to the building as part of the site's previous use as a petrol station and served as the office and shop The main roof was rebuilt in 1997. The mill is a postmill. The timber mill body, four patent sails and fantail are all supported by and pivot about a great oak post. This post rests on two crosstrees bearing on brick piers within the grey brick round house. The piers are intgrated within the perimeter walls of the round house, represented as bulges on the internal wall surface. The main oak post crosstrees and quarter bars all remain intact. The interior of the roundhouse would have contained the driveshaft and machinery that drove the three pairs of millstones that this mill operated.The remnants of a loading bay are visible at the rear of the roundhouse at first floor level. When the windmill was operational it was used for the grinding of wheatmeal and its refinement into white flour. A few appendages of this mechanism still remain in place at first floor level inside (S1). There were four patent sails, three pairs of stones, and a fantail (S2).
