Description
Desktop survey including examination of SMR, Record Office and various library records, as well as a site visit and historic land-use study was undertaken in 2003 by CgMs Archaeological Consultants. Concluded that the site is unlikely to contain prehistoric or Roman artefactual evidence and that during the Med period, the site lay beyond Newgate and to the W of the historic core of Beccles. During PMed period, a Manor House was constructed (BCC 041) which occupied the site until 1860's. This was then demolished for the construction of the printing works which lasted until 2004. As a result the modest archaeological potential of the study site has been further reduced by C19th-20th development of the site.
