Full Description
Site of Beccles Manor & Manor House, demolished when Caxton Printing works built in 1868. Position shown accurately on tithe map of 1841 (Ipswich Record Office). Drawing/photo survives (IRO?) (S1)
Extent of manor contained in manuscript in British Museum. 956 &1086: Manor of 2 carvcates belonging to the Abbot of St Edmunds. 1539: William Rede Owns. 16th century: Corporation of Beccles owns (S2).
Printworks demolished 2003, site now occupied by Supermarket. During these works, a desktop survey and subsequent monitoring was undertaken. Concluded that prehistoric and Roman evidence was unlikely and site lies outside medieval core of Beccles. Much pmed activity meant that any archaeology that may have occurred was likely to have been destroyed in these works (S3)(S4).
