Description
Archaeological monitoring was carried out on groundworks for a large new barn. The original plan was for the site to be evaluated by trial trenching, however, it was determined that the site should be monitored due to the relatively low ground disturbance of 25 moderately small stanchion pits. The overall footprint area of the new barn was 1500m squared. The pits were all 1.6m by 1.6m and excavated to a depth between 0.9m and 1.2m. All the pits revealed a similar deposit profile with 0.3m of topsoil over 0.05m and 0.15m of subsoil, overlaying the natural deposits. A Roman pottery scatter was identified.
