Description

An archaeological watching brief was carried out prior to the construction of a rear extension Quay Church, within the grounds of the churchyard. The watching brief consisted of two distinct phases, one of ground reduction and one of foundation excavation. During the first phase, ground level was generally reduced by 0.5m across the site. The second phase of activity consisted of the monitoring of ground reduction for the access road, the removal of a concrete pad between the church and hall, and the excavation of a soakaway. The soakaway consisted of the excavation of a trench that measured 2.10m wide and 15.40m in length and it was excavated to a depth of 0.5m. All of the works revealed grave cuts and brick vaulted tombs (S1).
