Description
Small scale exploratory test pits in order to locate and characterise existing water mains. The. test holes were all accurately positioned in relation to the existing water pipes and therefore the test pits generally corresponded with the original pipe laying trenches.Test holes 1 and 2 revealed a deep deposit of very heavy silty grey clay with red or 'rust' coloured flecks. This deposit was immediately below the thin topsoil of dark brown sandy loam around 0.20m. deep. The limit of the heavy clay deposit was not reached within the test holes which were both between 0.60 to 0.85 deep. Test holes 3 and 4 clearly demonstrated the extent of the disturbance caused during the original pipe laying work. Most of the deposits revealed had been inverted and mixed during previous back filling. No archaeological features or finds where recorded.
