Full Description

Lock gates, Baylham, industrial building at risk (S1).
1980: one of the best examples of an Ipswich & Stowmarket Navigation lock (but note the top gates are a modern replacement)(from David Alderton's 'Industrial Archaeology in and around Norfolk', booklet, 1980).
Listed building ref 279239, lock of red and gault brick. Wooden gates, at the top C20 and bottom C19, are fairly complete but ruinous. Believed to be the best surviving example of an Ipswich and Stowmarket Navigation lock. (S2)
2007: photographic archaeological survey prior to repair of lock (& prior to collapse of upper gates) (S3).
1980:(from David Alderton's 'Industrial Archaeology in and around Norfolk', booklet, 1980).
13/12/2011: Lock partly restored by River Gipping Trust, project ongoing. Photos taken (John Jones, Suffolk Indust Archaeol Soc).

2006: Series of test pit holes were excavated positioned in relation to existing water pipes and the orignal pip laying trenches. No archaeological finds or features were observed (S4).
