Description

A detailed gradiometry survey was conducted over approx 100ha of a mixture of pasture and farmland surrounding the Sizewell Nuclear Power Station ahead of development by EDF Energy. Readings were taken at 0.25m centres along traverses 1m apart. The Grad 601 has a typical depth of penetration of 0.5m-1m. Area 1 'Pillbox Field' and 'Greater Gabbard' approx 7.2ha of weed covered scrubland. Area 2 'Barn Piece' 4.1ha of loose sandy soil where potato crop had been newly harvested. Area 3 '10 Acres' approx 3.3ha of bare sandy soil. Area 4 'Stone Walk South' approx 6.8ha of sandy soil. Area 5 'Front Meadow' approx 3.4ha of flat pasture. Area 6 'East Lawn' approx 5.2ha of pasture. Area 7 'Old Covey' approx 5.2ha harvested wheat crop. Area 8 '20 Acres' 9.5ha harvested wheat crop. Area 9 'Lovers' 1.7ha harvested wheat crop. Area 10 'Badgers Burrows' approx 15.9 harvested wheat crop. Area 11 'Broom Walk' approx 6.7ha compacted sandy soil harvested onion crop. Area 12 'Red Rails' approx 14.2ha flat pasture. Area 13 'White Gate' approx 7.3ha flat pasture. Area 14 'Stone Walk North' approx 18.1ha farmland. Area 15 '12 Acre' 11.7ha ploughed farmland. Area 16 'Captain Rye' approx 4.4ha of sandy ploughed field. The overlying soils are mainly of Newport 4 which are typical brown sands (S1).
