Description

Trial trench evaluation was conducted ahead of the construction of two new dwellings in the eastern part of the former church grounds. Two trial trenches measuring 25mx1.60m were excavated within the proposed development area. Due to the presence of a lamp post Trench 1 was divided into two. These two sections (Trenches 1A and 1B) were extended up to a total of 3.5m westward to fully expose the grave cuts within the trenches. Topsoil was a dark grey brown sandy silt with occasional gravel and sparse charcoal flecks and CBM fracments. Its thickness varied 0.1-0.25m. In trenches 1A and 1B the subsoil was a mid reddish brown sandy silt with occasional angular stones and CBM fragments and sparse charocal, this layer was 0.41-0.75m thick. In Trench 1A a thin (0.08m) layer of tarmac was present below the topsoil and above the subsoil. Below the topsoil in Trench 2 Made Ground comprised a light yellowish brown sandy silt with moderate chalk fragments and occasional charcoal flecks and CBM fragments. Modern electricity cables were seen in Trench 2. The natural dift geology present below the subsoil was a mid pinkish red sandy silt with frequent large flint nodules, occasional gravel and sparse chalk flecks. Its depth caried from c0.65m-0.80m (S1).
