Full Description
2011: Evaluation trenches identified 30 grave cuts of which 10 were excavated revealing a series of well preserved inhumations within a formal burial ground. No coffins were evident, however coffin nails were recovered from the excavated graves. The graves exposed by the evaluation form part of a graveyard first associated with the House of Industry (workhouse) founded in 1765, which was bought in 1827 and was developed into the Suffolk County Asylum, subsequently named St Audry's Hospital. The burial ground served these institutions since at least the early 19th century and it continued in use until the early 20th century. The graveyard was closed in 1963. A church was constructed in the south east corner of the site between 1904 and 1924 (S1).
Included in the Proceedings of the Suffolk Institute of Archaeology and History annual round up of individual finds and discoveries for 2011 (S3).
