Description

An archaeological community event excavating twenty-nine test pits by local residents and other volunteers took place in July 2013. The event was preceded in May 2013 by the excavation of another two test pits by local school children. The event was organised by the Hoxne Heritage Group, as part of their HLF funded project 'The Story of Hoxne', with professional archaeological assistance from SCCAS.The test pits showed a wide variety of results, from clean undisturbed soil profiles to thick occupation soils rich with post-medieval and modern material. Several pits contained archaeological soil horizons at times deeply stratified, appearing to date back to the medieval period. See HXN 062, HXN 063-072 and DEN 012. Several test pits had minimal results simply exposing clean soil layers (S1).
