Monument record HXN 062 - Post-medieval pottery, finds and rubbish pits, 'The Story of Hoxne'

2013: An archaeological community event excavating 29 test pits by local residents and other volunteers. The event was organised by the Hoxne Heritage Group, as part of their HLF funded project 'The Story of Hoxne'. The test pits frequently demonstrated that preserved archaeological layers are present - see HXN 063-072 and DEN 012. The earliest pottery recovered dates to the early medieval period. Most of the test pits contained post-medieval and modern material, the quantities generally reflecting the location of each site in relation to the established post-medieval settlement.

Post-medieval pottery and occasional finds, including clay tobacco pipe, glass and metal work and the occasional fragment of medieval pottery were recovered from Test Pit 1 at Waveney Lodge, Test Pit 2 at Mulberry Cottage, Test Pit 6 at Little Park House, Test Pit 9 at Beech Cottage, Test Pit 10 at Aldersyde, Test Pit 11 at The Old Bakery, Test Pits 18 and 19 at Appletun, Test Pit 22 at Cross Street, Test Pit 24 at The Old Grapes, Test Pit 28 at Cosy Cot, Test Pit 29 at Larch House, Test Pit 30 at Farm Cottage, Test Pit 37 at Depperhugh, Test Pit 38 at Rear of 19-21 Low Street, Test Pits 39 and 40 at Low Street Village Green.

In addition, Test Pit 6 also identified a vertical line of interlaced roof tiles crossed the centre of the pit, which possibly marked an old garden feature and a small 19th century or later copper alloy mount decorated with a female face. Two small late 20th century rubbish pits were seen in Test Pit 38 at the Rear of 19-21 Low Street. In some cases, the excavation did not extend below the thick topsoil which may be sealing buried features. Prior to back filling Test Pit 22, a time capsule was placed at the base of the test pit (S1). Approximate Locations Mapped.
