Description

Geophysical survey was carried out to locate and characterise the archaeology of the Palace Mansion and Palace House Stables as part of an archaeological assessment carried out by Channel 4's Time Team. Years of remodelling and the presence of utilities severely hampered the use of the ground penetrating radar in trying to located the 17th century palace structures immediately adjacent to Palace Mansion (Area 1 NKT 052), as well as across the road on the site of the original stabling. Area 2 was surveyd to identify evidence of garden features, a possible foot path of plant bed was picked up. Area 3 was located at the main stable block, however remodelling and modern services distorted the results. Area 4 was located in the museum garden to map the southern end of the palace complex, the results possibly reflect responses associated with various garden layouts (S1).
