Monument record NKT 053 - 17th century Garden, Palace House Mansion, Newmarket

2011: The garden is shown as an open area on the original palace plans and a geophysical survey was undertaken to identify evidence of garden features. The geophysical survey recorded a number of drains or culverts crossing the area which detracted from results that may have been associated with the garden. A relatively coherent reflector is possibly evidence of a footpath or edge of a planting bed in the very south-east of the survey area. A linear trend across the top of the grid may be the edge of a former path or similar (S1).

2011: Evaluation and assessment by Time Team who investigated King Charles II's Royal Palace and racing stables. The current Palace House Mansion and entrance steps are Grade II* listed (See NKT 005) and the Palace House Stables are Grade II (see NKT 035). The original Palace was thought the have been constructed in 1671 by Charles II, although James I appears to have built a Palace within the near vicinity in 1608 (the exact location is now lost), and a second residence in 1614. A single trench was positioned within the area of the Palace House Mansion garden to identify any possible garden features associated with the Royal Palace. The trench contained a single gully which is thought to be post-medieval or modern due to its location within the subsoil. The trench was not fully excavated and further archaeological features may remain underneath (S2).
