Full Description

1913: Gravel pit producing hand-axes (and flakes) from gravel which is probably glacial outwash, capped by 2m of chalky till. "Most convincing site for an Acheulian industry occurring beneath a true glacial deposit ...". Some marked `Weatherhill Gravel Pit', `Gravel Pit 550' or `May 1913 ... 15 ft deep'. Still open but some years since gravel was dug (S1). Formerly recorded as IKL 014.

1958: Edwardson notates `Late Lower Palaeolithic flake tool, 13/4/58, MHM B55' from this pit (S2).

1972: Visit by Wymer, 2m of boulder clay above sand and grave, (S1)l.

1992: Sections cut by Bridgland, Lewis and Wymer in 1992 and one retouched flake found in a pocket of sand and gravel within chalky till, (S3).

Wymer (S1), notes a sharp cordate, and a subcordate handaxe from "the field Immediately north of Rampart Fields". This could mean the area around IKL 057 or it could mean IKL 012.

The Cordate handaxe mentioned from "Field 442" has been given its own record, (See IKL 384) as has the cordate from the field between the road and the river (See IKL 384), (S1).

Close to pits IKL 043 & IKL 025 also producing Palaeolithic flints.
