Full Description

1971: Lead tank with Chi-Rho symbols containing iron door fittings etc., and melted down lead including lug, found by (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s) with a metal detector. Subsequent small excavation around the tank by S E West (S1)(S2)(S3)(S4). Further details in (S5) and archive. For further lead tank from Horselands Field see IKL 034.
Autumn 1974: Excavations around site of 1971 lead tank disclosed a late Rom, possibly Christian, inhumation cemetery on an earlier Rom (probably C2) site. "The pre-cemetery evidence included a large pit filled with rubble, evidently from an important building, six human skulls and a stone pillar. A thick layer of chalk then preceded the use of the area as a cemetery. Three buildings were strung across the site; the most easterly included the remains of a small, tile-built `apse' (claimed as church by some) associated with the lead tank. Of the forty five inhumations in the cemetery, one was contained in a stone coffin and three showed evidence suggesting 'shackle lesions', suggesting possible slavery (S5, 103-125). The evidence suggests that the cemetery was Christian, in use from circa 350, and that two of the buildings and the lead tank were associated with the cemetery". Further details in excavation archive & (S5). For continuation of cemetery, see IKL 017 & 063.
Within scheduled area (S7).
