Full Description

Site of Melton Old Gaol. Said to have been demolished in early 1960s despite attempts to preserve the building. Photographic record made? (S3). Formerly LB Grade II. In 1975 described in some detail - see (S4). Two- storeyed timber building of c.1500. Ground floor formerly divided into at least three rooms; upper storey was jettied on four sides - contained 3-bay hall, a room of at least two bays to S, and a room of least one bay to N. In late C17 the jetties were underpinned in brick and the S end truncated. In the C18 the N end was truncated (S2)(S4).
From old listing - circa 80 feet by 40 feet, walls circa 3 feet thick, C15 red brick structure & timber framed above but possibly earlier foundations. Old Gaol of Liberty of Ethelreda, documentation that bailiff of Liberty had his gaol in Melton, in C13 at least. Mentioned in Fox's `Book of Martyrs' - Francis Noone of Martlesham Hall confined here before being burnt on Hasketon Heath in 1558.
Dutch prisoners kept here after battle of Sole Bay in 1665 (S1)(R1)(R2).
Site built on in 1983. Watching brief - no sign of anything but PMed disturbance.
Location needs checking.
