Full Description

Finds made during the excavation of a channel for Isleham Marina (exact spots not known but not apparently associated) in 1989 (S1):
a) Base of a small pot, undecorated, grog and burnt flint as fillers, new break along the top.
b) Small polished stone axe (?), 6.7 cm long, blade 3.3 cm wide. The `axe' is concave on one side, convex on the other. There is a small `hour glass' perforation near the butt end (hole 3.5mm in diameter) and the beginning of another perforation, unfinished, near the blade on the concave side. The stone has an irregular, angular, division down its middle, on one side the stone is very fine grained, greenish grey with an occasional mica speck, on the other the rock is coarser, but stil fine-grained, speckled light and dark greenish grey. Side roughly chamfered. Cutting edge appears unused.
Examined petrologically, but not thin-sectioned (petrological no. S181): manufactured from a volcanic ash of probable origin in Wales or Cumbria. Macroscopically, the surface resembles some of the Group IV polished axes from the Great Langdale area of the Lake District (S2).
In the area of these finds there was 1.3m of woody peat overlying chalky sand.
Also Neo.
