Full Description

A dense scatter covering 8m x 12m, of building materials (mortared flint, floor & roof tile) on a scarp on a N facing slope (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s).
Documentary work (S1) suggests the area as a likely site of a chapel dedicated to St Edmund. Finds of building material suggest an isolated domestic structure of high quality (glazed tiles), only four Med pottery sherds and one PMed suggest not a normal occupation site. One fragment Purbeck marble also abnormal. Bronze bearing cup (`brass') for a bell, metal detected from the site at the time of my visit (S2). Finds assemblage makes identification of this site as the documentary chapel inevitable.
In 1294 chapel of Ringshall (RGL 002) granted to cell of St Edmund. Connected to Hoxne Priory (HXN 004)(S3).
1991 & 1992 (& 1993?): excavation by the SIA Field Group summarised in (S4) - details to follow.
