Full Description

Cropmarks of extensive field system & trackways of at least two phases extending from Stratton Cliff to (& across) Levington parish boundary in NW (S1-S7). (NB Some of the features recorded above are probably Later Prehistoric or Roman and are now part of SNH 005).
The remnants of a Post Medieval field system are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs centred on TM 245394 in Stratton Hall and Levington parishes. The components of the field system are visible as ditches, presumably where hedges have been removed, and are fragmentary and dispersed over a wide area. The ditches are generally aligned NNE to SSW and WNW to ESE and appear to fit into the Post Medieval field pattern as known from the 1791 plan of Stratton Hall estate (S8) and the Ordnance Survey 1st and 2nd Edition 25" maps of circa 1884 and 1904 (S9) (S10). Their alignment is similar to that of the Later Prehistoric or Roman field system (see SNH 005) but in general the elements of the Post Medieval field system tend to be much straighter and more well defined. In the fields just to the south of the railway line a long linear boundary can be seen which, though appearing to have Prehistoric origins (see SNH 005), was clearly in use in the Post Medieval period, one section defining the parish boundary. Linear ditches of apparent Post Medieval date are related to this boundary, as well as earlier elements of the Later Prehistoric and Roman field system. Remnants of the Post Medieval field system are also visible in the area surrounding of the possible barrow later reused as a rabbit warren (TYN 009). (S2) (S4) (S11-S14)
Also fieldwalking survey prior to proposed construction of golf course (proposal turned down so no follow up) revealed small scatters of med and preh evidence (see Preh and Med). S15
