Full Description
Pottery kiln wasters found during building work. The majority of the sherds were found in a solid circa 30cm layer in a soakaway pit behind the building. The rear of the garden was reported to be very uneven by (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s) and finder of the pottery (S1).
Wasters, kiln dome debris, kiln props & tiles present. Sherds represent jars, jugs, platters, candlestick and distilling vessel. Fabric is a hard red sandy ware. Glazing on circa 20% of sherds is generally sparse yellow, both external and internal, a very small number with brown painted decoration. General impression of small quantities of LMed and transitional but the vast bulk is glazed red earthenware (G.R.E.) probably of C17 to early C18 date.
Kiln debris continues in the garden of Long Stop Cottage, which adjoins Pantiles Cottage on the E side (S2).
Large pond at TL 8656 5434 is probably the clay source for the pottery and appears to be indicated on an estate map of 1611 (S3). The area of Pantiles Cottage was a tenement held by `Tibbson' (name unclear on map).
