Full Description

Two bronze(?) flat axes and a probable spearhead (or possible dagger) fragment found in a heap of stones and waste material from commercial peat extraction. The items were found separately in one area of the dump with a metal detector (S1). All the objects were covered with a thick corrosion layer and examination of them suggests that all three were originally concreted together (S3). The area of peat extraction is a water-filled hole, approximately 1.5-2m deep, with a chalky base. It seems likely that the bronzes came from the peat/chalk interface (S2).
1. Flat axe 11.4cm long x 1.5cm thick (max), blade 6.3m wide, butt partly broken but approximately 3.5cm wide. Tapers from a mid point towards blade & butt in side view. 0.45kg in weight.
2. Flat axe 13.2cm long x 1.2cm thick, blade 6cm wide, roughly pointed butt. Almost straight sided with flat profile. 0.55kg in weight.
3. ?Spearhead/dagger, now in 2 pieces, much corroded. 21cm long (tang 9cm long) & approximately 1.8cm wide & 2mm thick; blade has maximum breadth of 2.5cm & approximately 4mm thick (max). Blade only shows a shoulder on one side (? other lost through corrosion).
Objects given to SCCAS by (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s) Nov 2007.
Also IA(?) flint gritted pottery and flint flakes.
