Full Description

Causeway to Church of St Mary on sandy hillock (SYL 004). Church `is surrounded by marshes, a causeway of nearly a quarter of a mile in length being its only connection with the road. A similar causeway on the other side of the river and exactly opposite to this runs from the river bank to the main road which passes through Brockdish'. Formerly a wooden bridge spanned the Waveney near Syleham Church. `An extract for 1657 from an old town book belonging to Brockdish reads:- "Laid out 17/- for the Brockdish part of Syleham bridge leading over the river to Syleham Church" (S1). Note also causeway to Wissington Church (NYW 022).
