Full Description

Timber framed barn, now part of Abbey Farm, `which must have once been the property of the Priory (SNP 009)... it appears that the original frame may in fact be C13, which would make it one of the earliest surviving timber buildings in the county (S1). 7 bays, 2 a later edition using re-used timbers. Plans and details with listed buildings section.
1999: Tree ring analysis from various posts in structure attempted , no matchable sequences found. Details, sketches and plans in (S2).
On the request of EH, a architectural assessment was undertaken on the barn at Abbey Farm. The barn is believed to date from the late 14th century on the basis of comparison with other 14th century barns in Suffolk, such as matching carpentry details with two late 14th century barns at Fressingfield and Choppins Hill. The assessment gives an account of the design of the original building and post medieval alterations (S3).
A series of detailed record drawings were commissioned prior to commencement of repair works following storm damage in 1986-7 (S4).
