Full Description
Aerial view of Sotterley Hall (built 1744, replacing or enlarging earlier Hall listed as have 20-29 hearths in 1674) and Park containing earthworks (S1). Park of 489 acres according to White in 1855. Details of Hall in (S2). Includes Church, SOT 005 and mounds SOT 002, 006 & 007. Pound marked beside road to SW. Probably includes emparked Med village?
Park may have been created at the same time as the building of the present Hall, c.1744. There is no mention of a park in the Sotterley account-book of 1598-1608. Park seems to have been created out of existing woodland and farmland - many of the ancient trees are in rows and stand on faint banks (S3). Park includes a number of C18 features described in (S4). Park shown on Emanuel Bowen's Map of Suffolk, 1755.
