Full Description

1991: Medieval & Post Medieval pottery scatter near Alderton House, C12-C16/C17, mostly C13-C15: 1 rim Thetford type ware, 3 rim & 11 body sherds Early Medieval coarseware (80g), 21 rim & 168 body, handle & base sherds Medieval coarseware (1,700g), 28 sherds Late Medieval/LMT unglazed wares (240g) and 14 sherds Late Medieval glazed wares (140g). Details in (S1).

1991: Finds from metal detecting survey include plain copper alloy strap end plate, a Late Medieval copper alloy double buckle and a buckle plate and a silver penny Edward III coin. Also included is a copper alloy vessel fragment assumed to be of Medieval / Post Medieval period although not specified on the finds sheet. Details in (S2).

1995: Further Medieval and Post Medieval metal detector finds from mainly Medieval and Post Medieval site include large bronze buckle pin, annular bronze buckle with traces of gilding, bronze buckle and clasp plate, a bronze strap end with two sheets and two rivets, 14th century bronze forked spacer plate with acorn shape terminal from strap end, small ornate oval bronze buckle and a broader version, silver penny coins of Henry III 1251-72 class 5b HIC/OLE/CHO/AIT 'For the moneyer Nicole of Canterbury', Henry III, Edward II 1320-1335 and Edward III 1335-1343. Also included lead disc, bronze oval mount, bronze object with pierced terminal collar, small gilded harness pendant attached to a hinge, bronze strip, bronze fragment with two arms and rivet and two lead weights assumed to be of Medieval / Post Medieval period although not specified on the finds sheet. 1996: Further Medieval and Post Medieval metal detector finds from mainly Medieval and Post Medieval site. Includes a bronze thimble ring, a cylindrical bronze object with square section (vessel/spout), possibly 14th century Bronze seal matrix S;L'./.DE.MA/SSAVC/n 'the seal of L. Massaucn' possibly the Massey / Masey family?, a bronze Strap end,bent 2 sheets, joined by rivet at each end with a cruciform terminal, bronze Shield shaped sheet mount with bar mount at end, held by one rivet, sexfoil sheet bronze mount, 14th century Bronze shield shaped strap end with bar mount, bronze strap end two piece trefoil terminal. Four ornate oval bronze buckles, a sheet bronze buckle plate white metal surface traces single rivet at end incised line decoaration with 'rocker' infill. Silver half penny coins of Henry III class 3 1248-50 /NIC/[…]/VND 'For the moneyer Nicole of London' and Edward I-III. Silver penny coins of FILIP.ON.NORhT for the moneyer Filip of Northampton Henry II 1180-9 active classes 1a-b,Henry II 1180-9 class 1 Lincoln mint,Henry V 1413-22 London mint and long cross type London mint. Silver farthing coins of Edward I, Edward II-III .EDWNDVS REX NN, Richard II 1377-99. Also included is a bronze circular casing and conical lead weight assumed to be of Medieval / Post Medieval period although not specified on the finds sheet. Details in (S3).
