Full Description

Burrow Hill. Medieval name Insula de Burgh. Owned by Butley Priory (BUT 002) `for whom the island was the main stepping-stone in their ferry-route to Orford .... The ferry house (now demolished) constructed on it (which lay on the S foot of the hill) was sufficiently important to be marked on a C16 chart' (S1)(R1). Note causeway to N (BUT 018) may be of Med construction? Also BA, IA, Rom & Sax.
An earthwork bank of uncertain function but probable medieval or post-medieval date is visible on aerial photographs to the north of Burrow Hill, centred on circa TM39124876, Butley parish. The bank is about 5-10m wide, and can be seen running northwards for about 460m from near the causeway recorded as BUT 018 at circa TM38924866, to circa TM39264871 at the north eastern tip of Burrow Hill. On 1943 photographs the bank appears to be rather eroded, and is interrupted in several places by narrow drainage ditches, presumably later in date than the bank itself. The bank may be a second causeway, or a continuation of that recorded as BUT 018, or a relict sea bank superseded by those to the east (see BUT 071). It has been levelled by ploughing by 1955. There is no evidence on the aerial photographs for the location of the ferry house described above.
Note three undated enclosure cropmarks lie on Burrow Hil - two are sub-rectangular and one is oval (see Iron Age entry). Presumably part (?) excavated by Fenwick.
