Full Description

450m causeway linking Burrow Hill (BUT 001) to mainland at Butley (S1). Date of construction unknown, possibly MSax or Med?
Shown on Hodskinson's 1783 map (S2).
A causeway of unknown date is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of 1943, centred on circa TM38804892. The causeway is circa 440m long and about 10-15m wide. Although the date of construction is unknown, the scale of the causeway suggests that it might predate the building of the sea banks and the reclamation of the surrounding marsh, supporting the interpretation above of a possible late Saxon or early medieval date.
