Full Description

Assortment of stone architectural fragments in St Audrey's Hospital (former C18 House of Industry and C19/C20 lunatic asylum). C19/early C20 gardens landscaped around Redwald House. Mainly late Med/early PMed in date, presumably from site of unknown ecclesiastical site, probably St Andrew's Church (MTN 010), which went out of use in mid C19. Stones include two faces from ?hood mould stops, ?C17 or slightly earlier; trefoil decoration from C14-C16 ?coping stone; other late Med/C16 fragments of moulding and carved stones built into retaining walls of terraced garden area (S1)(S2).
1997: Evaluation (& documentary search) of area around St Audrey's (see MTN 033) undertaken. No pre-C19 archaeology identified. Details in (S3).
