Monument record CSA 002 - Tangham Mount

Bowl barrow.
A mound circa 30 ft diameter and 5 ft high with traces of surrounding ditch to N and S. The writer believes it to be of Scandinavian date and to be similar to that at Bussock (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s) which he thinks must be a defensive post because "Bussock" " means a fortified place, by a stream" (S1) quoting (R1) and (R2).
1594: Shown as upstanding single mound on Ralph Agas map (S5).
1962: A bowl barrow with the ditch now surviving only on S side. The mound has a diameter of 20m and is 1.5m high. It is within a Forestry Commission plantation and has firs planted over it but is in fairly good condition. Published survey (25 inch 1927 revised)(S1).
1977: This barrow, which is well preserved under fir trees and bracken, was a height at first over 1m and diameter 15m. There is a ditch, depth 40cm, width from its outer edge to the mound 4.4m on the SE side only (S2). In coniferous woodland alongside track. Covered with bracken and fir trees. Mound height 0.96m, diameter 15m, ditch width 4.4m, depth 0.40m (S3).
1981: Fir trees and bracken covered - some slight animal disturbance. Ditch visible (S2).
1985: Trees on mound and in surround area felled (in 1981 according to Mr James, Forest District Manager). Surrounding area ploughed & re-planted with conifers. A few are regenerating naturally on the mound, which is otherwise covered with bracken and the stumps of felled trees. Its profile is bumpy and a fox-hole shows it to be built, at least in part of sand. Ditch visible as very shallow depression (S2).
1987: Illicit trench dug into summit of mound, 2.7m long x 0.9m wide and 1. 2m deep. No sign of any disturbed burials or of a definite old ground surface at the bottom. Two sherds of BA pottery recovered from the spoil. Hole back-filled, also two animal holes on the flank of the mound (S4). Trees on mound removed circa 18 months previously and not replanted. Stumps still visible (S4).

The barrow described above was visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs (S6)-(S10) with a diameter of approximately 27m.
