Full Description
Excavation of four 2m square evaluation trenches prior to housing development at Tacon Close, Eye. Site lay directly to the E (over road) of the supposed site of Med leper hospital, EYE 025. Trenches were dug to determine extent of leper hospital etc. In trenches A, B & D excavations through 15-25cms humic, root filled modern topsoil. Below this was layer of redeposited natural between 15 & 40cms depth lying above clean natural clay. Accompanying finds PMed in date, although included some sherds of Med coarseware along with fragments of possible human bone. In trench C a modern dump of building material was found. In conclusion material appears to be redeposited from demolition of former brewery prior to construction of chicken factory on hospital site, EYE 025. Nothing found to indicate Med activity on site (S1).
