Full Description
Broad green lane or driftway connecting Bedfield Long Green with Hungers Green in Monk Soham. Running transversely across the lane are a series of broad ridges and hollows which resemble ridge and furrow. The alignment of the ridges changes with the curve of the lane, making it clear that the ridges are not the truncated remains of more extensive ridge and furrow but have always been confined to the lane. The 1842 Tithe Map of Bedfield records this lane as 'Roadway' a piece of pasture belonging to John Ling and occupied by David Abbott (S1).
Possibly the ridges were constructed for drainage purposes as this is heavy wet land (S2).
