Full Description

Late November 1992: Blade fragment of a bronze spearhead metal detected from ploughsoil by (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s). Tip damaged, butt missing (old breaks but also some recent damage), lower part of hollow cast socket crushed & missing. Severely diseased. Side looped or pegged form. Details & drawing in file (S1).
5 December 1992: Site visit by C Pendleton & (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s), findspot located to within circa 5m (possibly more as few landmarks to tie into). Occasional PMed pottery & brick in ploughsoil all over field which, at this point, is very peaty. Quick walk found burnt flint 6m to N & several more 20m to N. Trial hole on presumed findspot demonstrated 30cm ploughsoil over 30cm plus peat (not bottomed). Ground rises slightly to N (away from river) where further trial hole 15m N of `findspot' found 30cm ploughsoil truncating flinty loamy buried soil (12cm thick) over clayey/chalky natural. The buried soil contained a burnt flint and animal tooth (S1).
Also frequent N-S plastic field drains under surface of field. Possible displacement of spearhead (note `recent' damage) probably from truncated buried soil to N. Note: further BA metalwork from further E in same field.
