Full Description
Lower part of a well shaft excavated on the beach. Cut into orange clay, 3 feet 3 inches in diameter, not lined. Surviving depth about 5 feet, original depth would have been about 20 feet. Situated 370 yards N of Benacre Broad and 20 feet E of the present cliff face, which is eroding very rapidly. Finds include parts of at least four pottery vessels, one partially glazed, a lead weight, a small leather fragment and two pointed wood fragments identified as ash (S1).
