Monument record DNT 003 - Denston Hall; Denston Park (PMed)

Long pond (?for fish) shown on C19 copy of 1674 map (S1). Pond still exists at TL 7582 5239, but is half its original length. Pond later incorporated into a formal garden, shown on a map of 1778 (S2), with a matching canal at its S end - C19 copy of the 1674 not extensive enough to tell whether this canal existed then or not. Another canal on the E side of the garden is not shown on the 1778 map. A building shown on the 1778 map, on the alignment of the S canal and to the W of it, was probably a dovecote - field adjoining named as 'Dovecote Paddock'.
Denston Hall is an early C18 building, red brick with blue heades, 5-bay centre with 2-bay wings at either side (S3)(S4).
For the Tudor brick range to the rear of the Hall and the former moat - see Med. Property acquired by the Robinson family circa 1617 and they built the C18 Hall.
Tree lined avenue to NE of hall.
Extent of park defined on HER map after 1880s mapping (original, C17th?, extent not researched - see S7 for details) - includes recently created lake to E of house (not on 1880s map), linear bank earthwork DNT 010 to S and circular ditched earthwork DNT 011 to NE of Hall. Park remains pasture with formal trees and plantations (S6).
