Full Description
Savornes Tenement. A copyhold cottage with a small piece of land called Salyns, Savens, Savins or Savornes is documented in the Hitcham manor court rolls from at least 1594 (the earlier court rolls are missing)(S1). Shown as a narrow yard with a barn-shaped building on the 1839 Hitcham Tithe Map and recorded in the 1840 Apportionment as `cottage & garden, 1 rood' (S2). Yard but no building shown on OS 6in scale map of 1905. Yard now gone. Dense scatter of burnt clay, brick, tile, some 6 to 7m across observed when a strip was excavated across the site for a new water main 1993. Also recovered were sherds of Med and PMed pottery, a fragment of a lead window came, glass, clay pipe stems, oyster and mussell shells (S3).
