Full Description

September 1992: Archaeological evaluation of site revealed a section of town ditch, thought to have surrounded the late Saxon and early Medieval town.
1993: Excavation undertaken to try and date digging and subsequent infilling of town ditch. An area of 192 sq m was available for excavation. Most features were PMed, a few Med and late Med features were found, cutting town ditch and giving a pre C13/C14 date for its backfilling. No absolute dating but suggestion that ditches had been filled by C12, and dug in late Saxon - early Med period. Pottery, animal bone, shell, roof tile and daub finds. Also Iron, clay and glass objects (S1).
