Full Description

Flint mine complex. Possible extension(?) of STN 032 (to N) although across road, and possibly linking to STN 030 (mines) & STN 021 (PMed knapping waste). Sustantial pits survive on W of N-S ride (sand/gravel or chalk possibly) which may be part of complex. To E of ride SCC APs (S1) show (not very clearly) exposures of chalk on surface in area as approximately defined on HER map. Detailed documentary and earthwork surveys needed.
October 1996: Area rapidly surveyed showing clear evidence of former mining but area destumped and raked level by Forestry Commission prior to re-planting. Extent not determined but mines to not apear to extend to arable field to E though a scatter of PMed knapping waste is present in NW corner of field (S2).

January 2018. 'Brecks from Above' and Breckland National Mapping Programme.
The earthworks of post medieval flint mines described above were not identified on the consulted sources. The exposures of chalk identified on aerial photographs (S3, equivalent to S1) are small and look more likely to be the result of modern activity; they are markedly different from the extensive spreads visible at sites such as SHER STN 030 600m to the southwest. On imagery from a lidar survey flown in 2015 (S4), the ground appears a little uneven, but not enough to be regarded as clear evidence of former mining. As a consequence, no features have been mapped at the site; however, see other nearby sites of post medieval flint mines: SHER STN 182, STN 030 and STN 038.
