Monument record ERL 082 - Eriswell Hall Mill

2.5 mills are recorded at Eriswell in 1086. Watermill situated at Eriswell Hall said to be of ancient origin (S1).
1839 Tithe Map & Apportionment names meadows to W of watercourse (named Bards Mouth? here) as Mill Meadow. Watercourse short (led into Eriswell Lode?), source appears to be Caudle Head to E. Tithe Map also shows circular island(?) in centre of water which has 3 arms on E side. Approximate position of former mill(?).
Both the 1818 Enclosure Map and the 1839 Tithe Map show a distinct 3-armed `moat'. It may be that this was an early hall site or ornamental moat connected with the medieval wall, as well as being the body of water which powered the mill. Both maps show a small building to the west of the `moat'. Note, too, the obviously artificial `pond' linked to the north of the moat. Rev J J Munday suggests that the half mill recorded in 1086 was shared with Lakenheath; that parish using the build up of water at this point in Eriswell (S2).
