Full Description

Bronze palstave metal detected at `S. Elmham St Margaret' (S1) but cited findspot ((see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s)) straddles the parish boundary. Unlooped `shield pattern' type, 15.8cm long, blade width 6.1cm. Slightly abraded condition. Developed `shield-pattern' type, Class 1, Group 3, Middle Bronze Age (S2). Cited findspot on road edge and in area of standing properties suggesting Med (?) or later re-deposition.
June 1994: Finder confirmed that 'the soil in which the object was concealed was part of a trailer load taken from a very large deep pond that was dug by JCB in the same field at road side west of Rookery Cottage. Three other farmers took quite a number of trailer loads to their farms.' (S3). New location also roadside, in area of standing properties and close (?) to Rom & Med scatters SEN 045 and close to edge (?) of St Margerets Green (SEM 020).
Findspot actually in South Elmham All Saints & St Nicholas parish, grid reference amended to location after (S3). Appears to be enlargement of existing pond (as shown on 1:10,000 OS map of 1982). According to (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s) also EMed pottery from excavations (S3).
