Full Description
Human bones (skull fragments, arm fragments, vertebra), apparently from a roughly E-W orientated inhumation found 1.5m down in an underpinning trench along the SW wall of the house. Bones found by workmen and the trench backfilled before they were reported. Condition of the bones suggests that they are medieval (S1).
In 1678 the property (divided into 2 parts) was known as `Cock's' and lay between the king's highway (S), Gedding churchyard (N), glebe land (W) and `a meadow towards Gedding pound (E). 1744 referred to as being near the pound of Gedding. In 1811 Cock's or the Pound House was sold to the parish of Gedding to be used as accommodation for poor people, and came to be known as the Town House. Sold by the parish in 1953. By 1968 renamed Church Cottage and 1981 had become St Mary's House (S2).
