Full Description

Metal detected finds. Waisted bronze axe-shaped object (anvil?) and tracer/ awl with bent end from same site (S1). Thin scatter of weird objects(!) from same general locality although only six Rom coins found, but note multiperiod site 015 to S and Rom brooch SNT 010 to N. Small (40mm by 38mm by 21mm) axe-shaped object. In form very blunted crescentric `blade' narrowing to a cast waisted area with fragmentary remains of iron fastening band (incomplete, possibly to attach handle). `Waist' visible on one side only - possibly casting flaw?
Has irregularly heavily hammered (?) rounded top up to iron band. Traces of single hatched grip/vice marks (or decoration?) remain just below the waisting. The `blade' form suggests an axe although its smallness suggests it may have been especially manufactured rather than adapted from a cut down axe. Date & function unknown. Possibly metal working anvil or leather working tool? Also long awl type object, very irregular, 9.7cms long, bent, worn, pointed tip with other end in form of small blunted toe. Date & function? Multi-facetted cross section. Drawings in file (S1).
