Monument record FMP 016 - World War II hexagonal pillbox.

Please read our .

Summary

A pillbox has been recorded from field visits and can be seen as structure on aerial photographs. The pillbox has previously been suggested to be a hexagonal type 22 pillbox; however the feature is seen to be rectangular on the aerial photographs and more likely relates to a TYPE FW3/28A pillbox which has been suggested from the Defence of Britain project.. The pillbox was most likely part of a Second World War defensive line along the River Lark and is in close proximity to further pillboxes to the south east (FMP 026) and west (FMP 025).

Full Description

Pillbox. Standard hexagonal type 22. (S1) Visited during Brecks Survey. (S2).

Some 150m ENE of house and stables and 75m E of Flempton - West Stow road, some 150m SSW of the River Lark. Type 28A pillbox. Of standard design, but no partition wall. Large embrasure concreted up; others partially blocked. The whole pillbox, except the entrance, has been more or less covered with earth, rubble, etc. Entrance faces E (S3).

November 2019. Breckland National Mapping Programme.
A Second World War pillbox is seen as a structure on aerial photographs (S4-S5). The pill box seems to be rectangular in form and can be seen as a structure in the 1940s as well as on recent (2016) aerial photographs but is partially obscured by vegetation . A previous survey (see above) suggested that the pillbox was a hexagonal type 22 pillbox; however the feature is seen to be rectangular on the aerial photographs and more likely relates to a TYPE FW3/28A pillbox which has been suggested from the Defence of Britain project (see above). The pillbox was most likely part of a Second World War defensive line along the River Lark and is in close proximity to further pillboxes to the south east (FMP 026) and west (FMP 025).
