Full Description
Thin scatter of detected Med metalwork finds, especially coins (& tokens?). Thought to be a fair site by detectorists. Whole field heavily detected by `nighthawks' - also note other metalwork scatters on field, see FRK 034, 041 & 043.
Note: A grant of a market and fair at Freckenham was granted to the Bishop (of Rochester?) in 1218 (S2).
The fieldwalking of a field overlooking the flood plain of the Lee Brook resulted in the recovery of a remarkable prehistoric assemblage. The survey identified 360 worked flints and 95 prehistoric potsherds (mainly Iron Age). This is the largest amount of prehistoric pottery discovered in one fieldwalking episode on any field in Suffolk. The earliest, patinated, flint assemblage can be dated by a simple single barbed (oblique) arrowhead of the Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age. The later, unpatinated, assemblage, of slightly poorer quality, probably dates from between the beginning of the Middle Bronze Age and the end of the Iron Age. Included in the Proceedings of the Suffolk Institute of Archaeology and History annual round up of individual finds and discoveries for 1999 (S3).
