Please read our .

Summary

A curvilinear earthwork bank, probably of post medieval date, has been identified on the ground, is depicted on 19th and 20th century maps, and is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs and lidar imagery. It has been suggested that it relates to the park which once surrounded Downham Hall. By the 19th century, it was functioning as a plantation boundary.

Full Description

Earthwork bank surviving in FC plantation. Probably bank associated with Downhall Hall Park (see STN 017). Late C18?

July 2017. 'Brecks from Above' and Breckland National Mapping Programme.
The curvilinear bank of post medieval date, which is described above, is visible as an earthwork on imagery from a recent lidar survey (S2), and to a lesser extent on aerial photographs (such as S3). It is depicted as a plantation boundary on modern and historical Ordnance Survey maps, such as the 1st edition 6 inch (S4). As suggested above, it could relate to Downham Hall Park (SHER STN 017), as could other linear banks and ditches recorded in the vicinity (SHER STN 136).
