Full Description

Possible site of St Stephens Hospital after (S1). Formerly recorded incorrectly, as being located at BSE 026 TL 8625 6466, based on a centred name location on the maps (S1)(S2). Origin of OS information needs checking (in British Library, OS Surveyors notes?). Foundation and dissolution dates unknown. Dependency of St Edmunds Abbey (S2)(R1)(R2). `Not mentioned by Tanner or Kirby, but Gillingwater says that remains wree in existence in his day. Slight fragments and re-used materials may still be seen in the vicinity' (S2)(R3). `Seems to have been situated on the N of the road between Eastgate bridge and St Nicholas' only a few pieces of old wall now remain' (S2)(R4). (R4) suggests location at circa TL 8620 6470. For outline discussion see (S3).
